Home / Without a Subscription

The short answer

Several current MMOs never require a recurring, real-money subscription: Guild Wars 2 (buy once, no fee ever), Albion Online (entirely free, optional Premium), and free-to-play games like Neverwinter, DC Universe Online and Lost Ark. Others avoid a mandatory subscription too, but cap what you can do instead: Old School RuneScape, RuneScape, EVE Online and Star Wars: The Old Republic. World of Warcraft is the clearest opposite case: its full game genuinely requires a subscription past level 20.

The three models, explained

1. Buy-to-play: pay once, own it, no recurring fee

You pay a one-time price for the game (or it's free) and there is no subscription tier at all, ever, for the core game. Guild Wars 2 is the clearest example: ArenaNet's own site states the base game has no subscription fee, ever. New expansions are separate one-time purchases, not recurring fees.

2. Free-to-play: no purchase required at all

The core game costs nothing to install and play, funded instead by an optional cash shop for cosmetics or convenience. Albion Online (no content restrictions on free accounts), Neverwinter, DC Universe Online and Lost Ark all fall here. None of these require a subscription to reach their core leveling game or main endgame activities, per their official sites.

3. Free forever, but with a real cap instead of a subscription

These games don't force a subscription, but they gate content behind a level, skill point or feature cap rather than a monthly fee:

  • Old School RuneScape and RuneScape use a "membership" that functions like a subscription, but Jagex lets players buy membership entirely with in-game gold via bonds, so no real-money recurring payment is strictly required to eventually unlock it.
  • EVE Online's Alpha clone state is free indefinitely, capped at roughly 20 million skill points and a limited ship list, with no forced upgrade.
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic's free-to-play tier has no expiry, but keeps a 1,000,000-credit cap and some features behind the Cartel Market.
  • World of Warcraft's Starter Edition has no time limit either, but stops at level 20 with no guild, Auction House, trading or mail access.

None of these four force a subscription purchase. But without one (or, for the RuneScape games, without earning membership in-game), you are permanently capped rather than merely playing an older or smaller version of the game.

Where MapRaiders stands on this question

Applying this article's own question to our project: MapRaiders is still being built, so there's no finished answer yet on whether any part of it will ever require a subscription. Territories are claimed by moving outdoors rather than by paying, and card battles use commander-led decks built by each player. Equal deck power between opponents is not, on its own, a promise that a future purchase will never confer any advantage; check the current shop and access status before assuming a model.

Frequently asked questions

Is buy-to-play the same as subscription-free?
Yes, in the sense that neither requires a recurring fee. The difference is the upfront cost: buy-to-play games like Guild Wars 2's base game ask for one payment (or are free) and then never ask again for the core game; free-to-play games never ask for any purchase at all.
If a game has an optional subscription, does that mean it isn't really free?
Not necessarily. An optional subscription that speeds up progress or adds convenience, without gating core content, is different from a subscription that's required to play past an early point. We label each game's cap explicitly above so you can judge that for yourself.
Which of these is the least restrictive without ever paying?
Based on official information, Albion Online places no content restriction on free accounts at all. Guild Wars 2's original campaign is also fully open with no subscription, though newer expansions are separate purchases.
